Murphy’s Law of Photojournalism has been reeking havoc on me for every major event this year. The largest race of the year was also the coldest and rainiest weekend ever. Thankfully the weather cleared up for the main races on Monday.

I am a list maker. Every day there is a list on my desk or in my phone telling me where I will go or what I will do that day, the habit was formed while working as an assistant for the VP of a telecom company. Orders were spouted and lists were made, that is how it went. But long after that job went away I still have at least a list for work stuff, home stuff and the long term list floating around. My New Years list which is usually extensive and seriously unrealistic was topped off with buying a home and reclaiming this sorry excuse of a blog from the dark corner of the internet where I left it almost a year ago.

Three months later I’ve got the house- now onto the blog. I’m starting out with a few back logged items from the past three months but my intention is to post something at least once a month. I figure if this guy can come up with at least one thing to say a day I can probably scrounge together one thing a month.

I’m trying to branch out on my rodeo coverage and get some newer looks. These are three from a team branding competition of Friday, I’ve got a week off from rodeos and I’m looking for some feedback on what to tweek. The last one was the one that ran in the paper but I was gravitating towards the first one.

World Superbike and tunnel vision.

After a month I’m at the cusp of thinking that this post is irrelevant. But a month ago I was very jazzed about going out and covering the full gamut of activities that surround World Superbike at Miller. When I began working out in Tooele County one of my first consistent assignments was to shoot races for the paper every weekend from AMA, LeMans, to club races and then eventually a year later World Superbike. Three years later its easy to have tunnel vision out on the track. Like lemmings everyone heads for turn 1 for the first lap and then migrates over to the attitude turns, this year I did see more people taking advantage of the Club House turn and the interior dessert but the attitudes still seem to be the place. This year I set out to cover the side shows, out of all of the races at Miller this one has the most going on outside of the race itself. The plan was to troll the paddock, vendor booths, club house and camping area during practices and qualifying races on Saturday and Sunday leaving all on track shots for Monday during the final races. The plan worked, sort of. Unexpected changes in shuttle service on Monday 20 minutes before the first race at the request of one photographer who missed the boat last year, derailed my plans for multiple angles on track. Without reliving the long rant going through my head while I was hopping fences and walking half of the course with a 400 during the first race I’ll just say if these shuttle changes continue next year learning to ride a vespa will be in my future. Anyway. The exterior photos worked out well, there were record crowds for their concert and some interesting fans on the prowl for free stuff on the other days. As for on the track, well… I’ll just post one- which was a scrub league guy during their morning practice.
